General info:
Peter Henry (also known as Henry Peter) was small in stature but big in every other respect. Because of his size he felt he had to do twice as much as everyone else to prove himself. He was a temperate, proud man who could read, write and speak the Swedish language. He had two loves, his family and his job. His children don't remember him having any other outside interests.
After he married Julia Stoneberg in 1900 they setup housekeeping at 107 Palm Avenue in North Warren, PA. He had a job in North Warren as a piano finisher. He reportedly was an excellent pianist and according to Julia he played the organ in the Presbyterian church where they attended. In 1910 his brother Charles and sister-in-law Lavina Oberg are also listed as living at 107 Palm Avenue (upstairs or in the back).
By 1918 they had moved back to Jamestown in to a house at 361 Hallock Street. Henry had registered for the draft for WWI on September 12, 1918 but there is no record of any active duty (he was 43 at the time so it's unlikely). His job was listed as a steam fireman at the electric light plant on his draft board registration form. In 1920 he had a job at a worsted mill in Jamestown as a fireman (steam boiler). He apparently held one other job for a short time in Renova, PA at a railroad car shop. It's not clear from the records whether this was before, during or after Hallock Street. It appears to be after as his son Robert recounted having to be vaccinated in PA to attend school in the early 1920's.
When they returned to Jamestown he bought a plot of land (3 lots) on Hunt Road in the Town of Ellicott just outside the Jamestown City limits in May of 1924. The land was bought from the estate of Fred M. Curtis, who also held the mortgage. The address was (is still) 41 Hunt Road. Here he built a house which they occupied for the next 26 years. The house cost $3,500 to build and he did most of the work himself.
From this time until his death he worked for the Jamestown Table Co. Wages at that time were in the range of $9-$15 per week. Henry was reportedly a very good bookkeeper and tracked every cent earned and spent. Henry and Julia led a simple life and were probably "poor" by today's standards. But their children felt that they had a good upbringing and a warm, loving family life which made a little go a long way. Henry was a religious man who read the Bible to his children after Sunday breakfast and had prayer before going to church. There was never any alcohol in the home or even playing cards. They did not have a car and walking was a way of life. The family entertainment center was an Atwater-Kent radio bought for him by his daughter Alice. It ran on batteries and only had headphones not a speaker. The children were not allowed to touch it if he was not there.
After Henry's death in June 1950 the house on Hunt Road was sold to the Fishers in August of 1950. Julia moved to East 3rd Street in Lakewood in to a small house built by her son John Charles.
