General info:
Solomon Stoneberg was father-in-law to both Peter Henry Oberg (married Julia) and Charles Elmer Oberg (married Levina, Julia's sister). Thus he became a blood line ancestor to two major branches of the Oberg family.
The name 'Stoneberg' was 'Stenberg' in Sweden, but there are spelling variations in certain US records including 'Stonberg' and 'Stoneburg.' Solomon and Fredrika emigrated in 1873. They left the port of Göteborg on 23 May 1873, with tickets for New York. He was listed as a blacksmith in 1880 on the Federal Census and there are a few Warren, PA directory listings from 1886-1897. The 1897 Warren, PA directory had him listed as a Stationary Engineer. (Here's Solomon's and Fredrika's home in N. Warren in the 1890's.) Solomon was an active Knights Templar Mason, in the Coudersport, PA Consistory.
Between 1898 and 1900, for unknown reasons, Solomon had left the family and moved to Portland, Oregon. While in Portland Solomon was married a second time (aft 1902) to a woman named Lilla Underwood. They lived at 166 Morris Street. He worked for the Oregon-Washington Railroad & Navigation Company (OWR&N) which was incorporated in Oregon in late 1910. It was originally the Oregon Railway & Navigation Company (OR&N) a subsidiary of Union Pacific. His death certificate listed his occupation as a Mechanic.
Solomon passed on 03 Sep 1921. His gravestone had an odd spelling of his name (a little short on vowels) and had a birth year that didn't match his death certificate (1851 vs.1850), but the Masonic symbol was good evidence that this was 'our' Solomon. Solomon had a somewhat tarnished reputation, after leaving his family behind, but we don't know all the causes. Since more than 100 years have passed since that time, we are just interested in recording some more details of his life in Portland for history's sake.
Lilla was born 18 Oct 1855. Lilla's last name from her first marriage was Underwood (spouse: George William Underwood b:1846, d:1908). Her maiden name was Bentley according to her death certificate. The Underwoods also lived in Foxburg PA and Warren PA area (1880 and 1900) at the time Sol resided in Warren. George William was a carpenter. Lilla's children were: Benjamin Franklin (Frank) Underwood (b:1878, d:1963), Elizabeth Underwood Feigh (b:1880, d:1951), George Herbert Underwood (b:1882, d:?), and Henrietta (aka Etta and Nina) Underwood Grulke (b:1884, d:1973). Etta apparently went to Portland also. Not sure if Sol and Lilla traveled to Orgeon together.
Both Lilla and Solomon were at 166 Morris Street, Portland, OR in the 1920 Census. The 1930 Census shows that, after Sol had passed on, Lilla Stoneberg was still living at the Morris Street address (listed as the mother) along with Herman Grulke (b:1881 WI, d:1954), Etta Underwood Grulke (b:1884, d:1973), Earle H. Grulke (b:1909, d:2003) and Donald H. Grulke (b:1914, d:2000). Currently contacting living Grulkes for more info on Lilla's and Sol's life together. Lilla passed on 10 Apr 1937.
Solomon had one brother and four sisters some of whom came to America at different times. His brother Johan Aron Abrahamsson [aka Ernest Stoneberg] was the first Stoneberg sibling to come to the US, arriving in 1872. Solomon's sister Anna Britta Abrahamsdotter Stoneberg came to the US in 1904 and settled with her brother and son in North Dakota. The other three sisters apparently stayed in Sweden.
